The county government of Trans-Nzoia has today taken a significant step to support local businesses by disbursing Sh 80 million through the Nawiri Fund. This initiative aims to benefit over 300 business-focused groups across the county’s 25 wards.
At the Kitale Agricultural Show of Kenya (ASK) grounds, Governor George Natembeya officially launched the initiative, addressing the persistently high poverty levels in Trans-Nzoia, despite its status as the nation’s food basket. Many families in the region are still facing financial challenges, prompting the county to take measures towards economic empowerment.
Governor Natembeya urged Nawiri Fund beneficiaries to effectively utilize the revolving fund, which carries a modest three percent interest rate. This funding injection is not just about money; it represents an investment in the independence of local businesses. The governor also assured beneficiaries of additional opportunities, including participation in county tenders.
To bridge the knowledge gap, Governor Natembeya directed county procurement officers to provide training for beneficiaries, ensuring they understand how to engage in government business. He emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in the tendering process, urging beneficiaries to familiarize themselves with the procedures.

“Regardless of your education levels, after accessing these funds, you should be conversant with the tendering process,” emphasized Natembeya, acknowledging the historical challenges faced by less-educated individuals in pursuing government tenders.
The governor expressed regret over past instances where a few individuals exploited the system unethically, disadvantaging others in their pursuit of county tenders. The Nawiri Fund launch drew a significant audience and included the presence of County Secretary Truphosa Amere, County Assembly Deputy Speaker Obed Mahanga, County Executive Members, various MCAs, and members of the business community.
The Nawiri Fund stands as a symbol of hope, showcasing Trans-Nzoia County’s commitment to fostering economic resilience and empowerment within its communities.
