Governor George Natembeya has hailed the efforts of teams and officials participating in grassroots tournaments across Trans Nzoia County, describing them as pivotal in discovering and nurturing local talent. Speaking at the Wambwa Kisiangani Tournament in Lukhome Ward, Saboti Sub-County, the Governor emphasized the tournaments’ dual role in fostering unity and keeping young people positively engaged.

“These tournaments are not just about winning; they are about identifying talent and offering opportunities to young people,” he stated.

The Governor also highlighted the transformative power of sports in combating social vices like alcoholism and drug abuse, particularly during the festive season.

Infrastructure Development and Future Plans

Governor Natembeya announced significant strides in upgrading sports facilities, including:

  • The Kenyatta Stadium, now 80% complete, set to become a game-changer for sports in the county.
  • Plans to build modern stadiums in all five sub-counties.
  • Collaborations with local leaders to secure land for a new playing ground in Machewa.

These developments align with the county’s vision of elevating Trans Nzoia as a sporting hub.

Victories and Recognition at the Tournament

The Wambwa Kisiangani Tournament, organized by local MCA Wambwa Kisiangani, drew several teams from across the county. Key highlights included:

  • Lukhome Ladies securing a 1-0 victory over Lukhome Rock Stars, with Ivey Wanjaa scoring the decisive goal.
  • Lukhome FC triumphing over Machewa FC in a thrilling 5-4 penalty shootout after a goalless draw in the men’s category.
  • Cash prizes awarded:
    • Lukhome FC: KSh 40,000
    • Machewa FC: KSh 30,000
    • Glory FC: KSh 20,000

Leaders Applaud the Initiative

The event was graced by several county leaders and dignitaries, including DAP-Kenya party leader Eugene Wamalwa, who commended the county government’s commitment to sports development.

“Such initiatives are essential for identifying talent and placing Trans Nzoia on the map in the sporting world,” said Wamalwa.

MCA Wambwa Kisiangani highlighted the tournament’s role in fostering peace and unity among the ward’s diverse communities.
