The County Government of Trans Nzoia is dedicated to collaborating with the Turkana community to ensure they receive equal services and opportunities as other residents. Governor George Natembeya, through his representative Stanley Kirui, the Gender, Sports, and Youth CEC, emphasized this commitment during a meeting with the community at Levoyage Hotel.
“The previous government employed people on permanent and pensionable terms to the maximum. However, I have considered a few of you after taking over. We will continue empowering this community through other avenues,” Governor Natembeya stated. Despite limited employment opportunities, the governor highlighted various empowerment initiatives for the Turkana community.
Governor Natembeya disclosed that more youths from the Turkana community would join others in the Ukombozi Kazi Mashinani initiative to enhance their income-generating activities. He also announced plans to upgrade the poorly developed Burma estate within Kipsongo, which is predominantly occupied by the Turkana community, under the Urban Settlement Program.
“We must ensure that our Turkana community enjoys the same benefits as other communities. That is why we proposed that the Kipsongo area be included under the Urban Settlement Program, where good houses will be built and connected to water and electricity,” he said.

Kirui added that the county government has established a new water company, TRANSWASCO, which plans to hire many people. He emphasized the importance of including members of the Turkana community in the recruitment process at TRANSWASCO.
The governor’s promises were in response to concerns raised by the community’s professionals and elders. Chris Lorot expressed the community’s desire to be part of the government to contribute to the county’s development. Stellah Lochodo highlighted that the community has qualified professionals who should be considered for senior positions in the government.
The meeting was attended by Governor’s Delivery Unit Director Samuel Ereng, a member of the community, and other professionals. The County Government of Trans Nzoia is committed to ensuring that the Turkana community receives equal opportunities and continues to work towards their empowerment and inclusion in county initiatives.
