In a ceremonious event held at the Kitale Museum grounds today, Sikhendu FC officially received the Governors Cup trophy from Kapsara FC. The handover follows the thrilling conclusion of the last Governors Cup tournament, where the two teams ended in a tie during the final match.

Governor George Natembeya had earlier suggested that both teams share the honor of the trophy, with each team holding it for six months before the next tournament. The upcoming Governors Cup 2nd Edition is scheduled for 2024, where Sikhendu FC will have the chance to defend their title.

The event was graced by county government officials, team captains, coaches, and other dignitaries. Kapsara FC, who had held the trophy since the last competition, graciously passed it to Sikhendu FC, symbolizing their shared triumph in the tournament.

Stanley Kirui, the County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Gender, Sports, Culture, and Tourism, commended both teams for their exemplary performance and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. “There were challenges in the previous tournament, but those difficulties will serve to improve the organization and experience of the next tournament,” Kirui remarked.

He emphasized the importance of thorough planning for the upcoming tournament to ensure it meets the objectives of the Governors Cup. “The next tournament will have its own framework and objectives,” he added.

Kirui also highlighted the need for the county team to be well-prepared by December, noting that the performance in the tournament would be a key factor in his evaluation. 

The ceremony not only marked a shared victory but also set the stage for future competitions, with both teams eager to showcase their talents in the next Governors Cup.
