The vibrant hills of Cherangany Sub-County were alive with energy as the Regional Track and Field Championships unfolded at the Zion Transcend Sports Academy, bringing together top athletes from Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Turkana, and Samburu counties.
The event, held at the newly completed Zion Transcend Stadium, showcased world-class facilities and electrifying performances from junior and senior athletes vying for spots in upcoming international competitions.
“For the last two days, this stadium has hosted the best athletes in the North Rift as they try their luck to join Kenya’s team. We witnessed incredible performances in sprints, middle- and long-distance races, and field events,” said Hon. Wesley Korir, founder of Transcend Academy and former Boston Marathon champion.
County Government Reaffirms Sports Investment
Representing the County Government, Chief Officer for Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture and Tourism Madam Jane Wachwenge praised the athletes and emphasized Governor George Natembeya’s commitment to sports infrastructure.
“H.E. Governor Natembeya is determined to ensure that the ultra-modern Kenyatta Stadium will be completed and operational by next year to accommodate all sporting disciplines,” she said.
She also commended Hon. Wesley Korir for his role in nurturing grassroots talent and providing a high-standard facility for hosting the championships.
“We are grateful to Hon. Korir for giving back to the community through this academy and for supporting the dreams of our young athletes,” Wachwenge added.
Athletes Set for National Stage
The championship concluded with several athletes qualifying for the national trials in Nairobi. The County Government pledged full support, including facilitating transport for all qualifying athletes.
“We are proud of you and wish you success at the nationals. Keep the spirit of discipline and teamwork alive,” said Wachwenge.
Vision for Future Athletic Excellence
Hon. Wesley Korir called for sustained investment in sports development, stressing the need for better infrastructure and adequate funding.
“Talent can only thrive when we provide the right environment. With the completion of Phase 1 of this stadium, we now move to Phase 2, all for the glory of God,” he remarked.
