Trans Nzoia Launches ECDE Teachers Retooling Programme

Trans Nzoia Launches ECDE Teachers Retooling Programme

The County Government of Trans Nzoia has launched a Competence Based Education retooling programme aimed at equipping ECDE teachers with updated teaching skills to improve the quality of early childhood learning across the county.

The County Government of Trans Nzoia, through the Department of Education and Vocational Training, has rolled out a Competence Based Education (CBE) retooling programme for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers across the county.

The programme aims to equip teachers with modern teaching methodologies following the transition from the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) to Competence Based Education (CBE).

Speaking during the launch at Kiminini Sub-County, County Executive Committee Member for Education and Vocational Training, Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama, said the training is critical in improving the quality of teaching and strengthening foundational learning among young pupils.

“This training is very key because it will resharpen our teachers and ensure pupils get the best foundation in learning,” she said.

More Trainings Planned Across the County
Ms. Mutama noted that the curriculum changes require teachers to be adequately prepared to ensure smooth transition of learners from ECDE to pre-primary education.

She revealed that the county plans to train more than 3,760 ECDE teachers through sub-county-based sessions to ensure all educators are reached.

“Next financial year we are planning more trainings to equip teachers with the required methodology,” she added.

The CEC further announced that teachers participating in the programme will receive teaching aids to support classroom learning and improve lesson delivery.

🟢 Key Support Initiatives Under the Programme:

✔️ Retooling ECDE teachers on CBE methodology
✔️ Distribution of teaching aids to teachers
✔️ Sub-county-based training sessions
✔️ Improved classroom learning support

County Distributes Learning Materials to ECDE Centres
The county government has also started distributing exercise books, pencils, and chalk to ECDE centres across Trans Nzoia.

According to Ms. Mutama, the initiative is intended to reduce the burden on teachers who often purchase classroom materials using their own resources while also encouraging higher enrolment in ECDE centres.

She also announced plans to organise an ECDE teachers’ forum that will bring together educators from across the county alongside Governor George Natembeya.

“Governor Natembeya has the issues of ECDE teachers at heart because they are the foundation of our future generations,” she said.

County Plans to Recruit More ECDE Teachers
The Education Department confirmed that funds have been set aside in the current financial year to employ additional ECDE teachers in a move aimed at reducing the pupil-teacher ratio in learning institutions.

Trans Nzoia County Director of ECDE Peter Omonya and Deputy Director Pacifica Ochichi welcomed the programme, noting that teacher replacements are urgently needed following the retirement of many educators.

Mr. Omonya also cautioned teachers against fraudsters soliciting money in the name of employment opportunities.

“Teachers should wait until vacancies are advertised by the County Public Service Board, which has the mandate to employ county staff,” he warned.

Strengthening Early Childhood Education in Trans Nzoia
County education officials described the retooling programme as a major step toward improving the quality of early childhood education and ensuring teachers are fully prepared to implement the new curriculum effectively.

✔️ More than 3,760 ECDE teachers targeted for training
✔️ Teaching aids and learning materials being distributed
✔️ Additional ECDE teacher recruitment planned
✔️ County intensifying support for foundational learning

The County Government of Trans Nzoia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ECDE education as part of broader efforts to improve learning outcomes and support the future of children across the county.
