Governor George Natembeya has been endorsed as the patron of boda boda SACCOs in Kenya’s Western Region, representing counties including Trans Nzoia, Vihiga, Busia, Kakamega, and West Pokot. The endorsement signifies a collective effort to address the challenges facing boda boda riders and promote self-sustainability within the sector.
During the event in Kitale, riders underscored the importance of empowerment and unity.
“When boda boda riders are empowered, no one can take advantage of us. We need to own our motorbikes, employ ourselves, and improve our livelihoods,” said Peter Simiyu, a rider representative.
Governor Natembeya’s Commitment to Riders
Governor Natembeya expressed his dedication to championing boda boda issues at county and regional levels. He pledged to advocate for access to financing and training opportunities:
“The unity of boda boda riders is critical not just for their empowerment but for the overall development of the region. I will ensure they have access to NAWIRI funds as SACCOs, enabling them to grow and create sustainable livelihoods.”
Natembeya also emphasized the political significance of boda boda riders:
“When youths have money in their pockets, they cannot be misused by politicians who only remember them during elections by giving them reflector jackets.”
Calls for Unity and Collective Bargaining
Leaders at the event, including Moses Odhiambo, a youth leader from Busia County, urged the Luhya community to unify for greater influence in national politics:
“This time, the Luhya community must unite and vote as one. Whether we win or not, unity is non-negotiable.”
The boda boda riders highlighted the importance of SACCOs for collective bargaining and welfare improvement.
“With a united SACCO, we can negotiate better terms and ensure our welfare is taken care of,” said John Wekesa, the Boda Boda SACCO chairperson.
Driving Economic Growth and Social Change
Governor Natembeya outlined the untapped potential of the boda boda sector in driving regional economic growth:
“The boda boda sector has untapped potential, and with proper empowerment, we can change lives and create a ripple effect of growth.”
The event was attended by Trans Nzoia County Chief of Staff Dickson Wamocho, Chief Officer for Governance Sammy Sichangi, and the Governor’s personal assistant Emmanuel Wamalwa.
The focus remains on equipping riders with the tools and resources to achieve financial independence and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the region’s economy.
