Bondeni Chalicha Water Project Site Handed Over, Targets Over 3,000 Residents

Bondeni Chalicha Water Project Site Handed Over, Targets Over 3,000 Residents

Trans Nzoia County, in partnership with the World Bank through FLLoCA, has launched an 8M shilling water project to supply clean water to over 3,000 residents in Machewa and Sikhendu wards.

In a major step toward solving water access challenges in Machewa and Sikhendu wards, Trans Nzoia County has officially handed over the site for the Bondeni Chalicha Water Project. The initiative, worth Ksh. 8 million, is a collaborative effort funded by the County Government, the National Government, and the World Bank’s Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program.

This gravity-powered system is expected to transform lives by delivering clean, safe water to more than 3,000 residents, including schools, dispensaries, and markets across the two wards.

🗣️ “Water Is Life”: Leaders Emphasize the Project’s Significance

At the site handover event, Chief Officer for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Dorothy Nyukuri emphasized the project’s alignment with constitutional rights and its potential to create lasting change:

“Even the Constitution of Kenya 2010 enshrines every citizen’s right to clean and safe water. Bondeni, being on higher ground, will naturally serve Chalicha downstream, reflecting the natural balance God intended.”

Nyukuri also stressed the project’s climate-responsive foundation. With FLLoCA’s support, the initiative aims not only to supply water but also to reverse the effects of climate change through tree planting, wetland protection, and sustainable farming practices.

🔧 Sustainable Engineering for Long-Term Impact

Kiminini Sub-County Water Officer Constantine Chepchumba detailed the technical plan behind the project:

“This gravity-driven water system is both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. We will rehabilitate springs and extend pipelines to supply the Bondeni Tree Nursery, schools, dispensaries, and local markets.”

By harnessing gravity and rehabilitating natural water sources, the project ensures low maintenance costs and a smaller environmental footprint—a key consideration in the era of climate consciousness.

🏘️ Community Ownership and Local Empowerment at the Core

Local leaders welcomed the project with optimism and called for community support and involvement:

  • Machewa Ward MCA Kisiangani Wabwa hailed the project as a “long-awaited solution” and urged locals to safeguard it against vandalism, underscoring that “this project belongs to the community.”
  • Sikhendu Ward MCA Andrew Kutitila praised its eco-conscious approach and emphasized local employment:

“This project is not just about water; it’s about empowering our community economically and ensuring lasting benefits for all.”

🌿 FLLoCA: Tackling Climate and Water Challenges Together

Through the FLLoCA initiative, Trans Nzoia is addressing water scarcity and climate change hand-in-hand. The project symbolizes a shift toward resilience-focused development, where clean water access, environmental restoration, and economic empowerment converge.

The Bondeni Chalicha Water Project is slated for completion by the end of the current financial year, marking a crucial milestone in Trans Nzoia’s climate action and development journey.
