Trans Nzoia County’s Trade and Industrialization CECM, Samuel Gacheru, has called on community groups in the county’s 25 wards to apply for the NAWIRI County Empowerment Fund, a flagship initiative of Governor George Natembeya aimed at boosting grassroots economic empowerment.
During a sensitization meeting in Kiminini Sub-County, Gacheru highlighted the program’s impact, noting that:
- 21 groups in Kiminini and 13 in Nabiswa wards have already benefited from the first phase.
- Over 300 county tenders, each valued at a minimum of KES 250,000, are earmarked for program beneficiaries.
“The revamped NAWIRI model ensures 100% loan repayment, overcoming challenges of past initiatives that left revolving funds crippled,” Gacheru noted.
Chief of Staff Dickson Wamocho reinforced Governor Natembeya’s commitment to devolving resources to grassroots communities, urging beneficiaries to reinvest profits into income-generating ventures to sustain the revolving fund’s impact.
NAWIRI Fund Board Chairperson Martin Waliaula revealed that funding for the initiative increased from KES 80 million last financial year to KES 100 million this year. The program targets empowering 50 groups per ward by 2026-2027.
The fund supports a range of community ventures, including school construction projects and other supply contracts, fostering improved livelihoods and economic growth at the grassroots level.
Public sensitization meetings will continue across the county to encourage participation and gather feedback from residents, ensuring the program meets its objectives effectively.
