The Trans Nzoia County Climate Change Planning Committee (CCPC) has approved the action plan for the 2024/25 financial year, which focuses on implementing 45 community projects under the Financing Locally Led Climate Actions (FLLoCA) program. The committee, chaired by Dr. Pepela Wanjala, County Executive for Water, Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change (WENRCC), greenlit the projects after reviewing their potential to adapt to, mitigate, and enhance resilience against climate change impacts.
The projects, funded through the Climate Change Resilient Investment Grant (CCRIG), have a budget allocation of Kes 305 million. The funding comes from development partners as well as contributions from the National Government and the County Government of Trans Nzoia.
Last month, members of the Ward Climate Change Planning Committees (WCCPCs) from Trans Nzoia’s 25 wards completed a review of the Participatory Climate Risk Assessment (PCRA) blueprint. The PCRA identifies community-specific climate hazards and prioritizes actions to address these risks.
Dr. Pepela emphasized the need to expedite the implementation of the approved projects, targeting completion by the end of December. He stressed the importance of accelerating the processes required to ensure the timely execution of these climate-focused initiatives.
Echoing Dr. Pepela’s sentiments, Chief Officer Dorothy Nyukuri confirmed that the Climate Change Unit (CCU) and the WCCPCs are committed to advancing the projects to the next phase. She assured stakeholders that the necessary funds are available, encouraging teamwork and collaboration to ensure the success of the community-led projects.
The approved projects encompass a variety of climate resilience activities, including the rehabilitation of dams, establishment of energy-saving stoves and briquette production centers, spring protection, solarization of boreholes, and promotion of fish farming through the creation of ponds. These initiatives will be carried out across the 25 wards of Trans Nzoia County, with the aim of building sustainable and climate-resilient communities.
