Embrace ADR to End Unsettled Land Cases, Says Lands CECM Mutama

Trans Nzoia residents are urged by Lands CECM Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama to adopt Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms to address the backlog of land disputes and promote faster resolutions.

Trans Nzoia residents have been encouraged to embrace Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms as a means to reduce the backlog of land cases in courts. This call was made by Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the MESO Farm (Saboti) and the Agricultural Finance Cooperation (AFC) at the County Headquarters on Tuesday, Ms. Mutama acknowledged that while the courts have played a significant role in resolving land disputes, the increasing number of cases has become overwhelming.

She noted that the backlog has led to prolonged delays in resolving some disputes, which in turn has had economic consequences for the involved parties. The extended legal processes have inconvenienced many residents, creating a need for more efficient solutions.

Ms. Mutama highlighted the effectiveness of ADR in resolving certain land disputes quickly, while also fostering cohesion among community members who have been involved in long-standing conflicts. She emphasized that ADR not only speeds up the resolution process but also helps build a sense of unity within communities.

The meeting participants, including representatives from the MESO cooperative society, Eng. Okundi, and the AFC, are scheduled to reconvene on Wednesday to discuss potential solutions for resolving a 600-acre land dispute in the area.

Trans Nzoia County Secretary Truphosa Amere echoed Ms. Mutama’s sentiments, urging members to devise practical solutions to address issues that, in some cases, have persisted for nearly 35 years. She emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in finding a resolution, highlighting the potential benefits of ADR for all parties involved.
