Governor George Natembeya leveraged this year’s Jamuhuri Day celebrations to spotlight significant achievements under his administration, with key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure taking precedence. Addressing a large gathering at Sikhendu Primary School, the governor reflected on two years of progress while outlining ambitious plans for the county’s continued development.
Major Advances in Healthcare
Healthcare was a central theme of the governor’s address. Natembeya announced that the Tom Mboya Mother and Baby Hospital, an 80-bed facility dedicated to maternal and infant care, is nearing completion and will be inaugurated in February 2025.
“Health is the real wealth,” he remarked, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to accessible healthcare.
In addition, six maternity theatres have been constructed across Kwanza, Cherengani, Saboti, and Kiminini sub-counties. With 30% of the county’s budget allocated to healthcare, over 2,000 community health promoters have been engaged to bring essential services directly to households.
Agriculture and Food Security
Governor Natembeya celebrated the success of the Fukuza Njaa initiative, which has bolstered food security for over 254,000 households. The program will expand in January 2025 with the distribution of free, high-quality seeds to an additional 100,000 households.
“We are ensuring that every household has the means to thrive, even in the face of erratic weather patterns,” he said, addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
Efforts to counteract climate change include the planting of 2.3 million trees and the introduction of alternative livelihoods, such as beekeeping, to benefit wetland communities.
“Conversations about climate change are no longer romantic ideals—they are a matter of life and death,” he cautioned.
Infrastructure Development
In infrastructure, over 2,000 kilometres of roads have been graded. The county is also preparing to upgrade Kiminini market into a municipality and complete the Kenyatta Stadium, which will serve as a hub for sports and performing arts.
Education Initiatives Transform Lives
Governor Natembeya lauded the revolutionary Elimu Bursary, which has supported 22,000 students in public day schools. Increased funding for vocational training centres and a school milk program benefiting 42,000 early learners were also highlighted as key achievements.
“Education is the key to removing us from the shackles of poverty,” he stressed.
Modern Public Service Facilities
The governor unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art headquarters to centralize county operations and improve public service delivery.
“This facility will be a one-stop shop for all services rendered to mwananchi,” he said.
The Jamuhuri Day event drew a diverse audience, including Deputy Governor Philomenah Kapkory, County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi, county staff, other government officials, and members of the public.
Governor Natembeya’s address highlighted his administration’s dedication to transformative governance, showcasing tangible achievements and a clear vision for the future.
