The number of students enrolling in vocational training centers (VTCs) across Trans Nzoia County has significantly increased, thanks to Governor George Natembeya’s commitment to expanding access to technical education.
Speaking during a sensitization meeting in Trans Nzoia East Sub-County, County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Education, Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama, highlighted the impact of the increased funding.
📢 “The governor’s dedication to technical training education is yielding positive results. We are witnessing more young people enrolling in VTCs to acquire practical skills,” Mutama stated.
🔹 The county has 32 vocational training centers benefiting from the increased capitation.
🔹 The initiative aligns with the county’s goal of equipping young people with marketable skills.
🎓 Strengthening Vocational Training Programs
Mutama emphasized that the funding boost is opening doors for many youths who have recently completed primary and secondary education, allowing them to gain hands-on training in various fields.
✅ “This is a promise fulfilled, and it is creating opportunities for thousands of young people seeking vocational skills to secure their future,” she added.
She also commended the Revenue and Enforcement departments for their role in supplying uniforms to VTC staff and suggested that VTCs could be further involved in county programs.
💡 “VTCs can manufacture uniforms for students under the county’s scholarship program and produce desks for early childhood development (ECD) classrooms. This will enhance their sustainability and impact,” Mutama proposed.
📌 Specialization and Infrastructure Development
Trans Nzoia County Director of Vocational Training, Eliud Lusweti, announced plans to introduce a specialization model for VTCs.
🛠️ “Specialization will allow centers to focus on specific trades, optimizing resources and ensuring high-quality training. This approach will also help address the challenge of limited trainers, tools, and equipment,” said Lusweti.
He acknowledged the support of the County Assembly’s Education Committee, led by Chairman Joshua Cheloti, in offering bursaries to vocational trainees. However, he urged for more funding from ward-specific allocations to improve VTC infrastructure.
🏗️ “The current capitation primarily supports teaching and learning materials, but additional investment is needed to enhance infrastructure and create a conducive learning environment,” he noted.
🔧 New Training Equipment to Boost Learning
To tackle equipment shortages, Lusweti revealed that Trans Nzoia County is set to receive a third consignment of tools and equipment from Poland’s Tools to Work organization.
🔹 The new equipment will strengthen practical training at VTCs.
🔹 The county government remains committed to improving technical education for youth empowerment.
The increased capitation marks a significant step towards equipping young people with skills that enhance their employability and economic opportunities, reinforcing Trans Nzoia’s commitment to vocational education. 🚀
