Historic Handing Over of HR Files Marks New Era for Kitale National Museum

The County Government of Trans Nzoia, National Museums of Kenya, and IGTRC officially transfer HR files of former museum staff to the county, celebrating 100 years of Kitale National Museum.

In a landmark event, the County Government of Trans Nzoia, the National Museums of Kenya, and the Intergovernmental Technical Relations Committee (IGTRC) officially handed over the HR files of former National Museums of Kenya staff to the county government of Trans Nzoia. This significant transition coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Kitale National Museum, established in 1924.

County Secretary Truphosa Amere welcomed the new staff, emphasizing the importance of adapting to change. “Change is inevitable and depends on each individual. The faster they adapt, the better,” she stated.

Mr. Stanley Kirui, CEC for Gender, Sports, Culture, and Tourism, highlighted the historic nature of the event. “As we hand over the HR resources today, it is noteworthy that the museum marks 100 years since its establishment in 1924,” he said. He also mentioned that staff from the Culture and Tourism Department have been stationed at the museum to integrate with the devolved staff. “Plans are underway to modernize the facility to preserve our culture and improve revenue collection,” Kirui added, urging the national government to devolve funds for smooth operations.

Mrs. Julia Kichweng, CEC for Public Service Management, called for community involvement in improving the facility. “The museum belongs to the people of Trans-Nzoia. We must involve all communities in its enhancement,” she urged. Kichweng also encouraged the revival of past practices to add meaning to the museum’s heritage.

Mr. Nyaera from the National Museums of Kenya acknowledged the complexities of devolving museum operations. “The museum is a tricky section to devolve, which is why it took a long time. Trans Nzoia will serve as an example for other counties,” he noted. He wished the 19 transitioning staff well and assured continued collaboration between the National Museums of Kenya and the county government.

Ms. Mumbi, representing IGTRC, confirmed the handover of all museum assets in February following the governor’s signing of the Intergovernmental Participation Agreement (IPA).
