During the International Day of Peace celebrations in Kapenguria, leaders from the North Rift Economic Block (NOREB) renewed their call for peace and unity across the region. The event brought together key figures, including governors, county officials, and community representatives from the seven NOREB counties: Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, and Baringo.
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, represented by County Health CEC Sam Onjwang, stressed the critical role of peaceful coexistence in fostering development. Natembeya urged county leaders to prioritize peace efforts, noting that sustainable progress is only achievable through harmony among communities.
West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin and Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wesley Rotich echoed Natembeya’s sentiments, calling for a culture of understanding and tolerance. They emphasized the essential role of women and youth in peacebuilding, encouraging their active involvement in regional peace initiatives.
A highlight of the celebration was the launch of the “Quest for Political Decency and Accountability in Kenya” booklet by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC). NCIC Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia underscored the importance of transgenerational dialogue as a means of fostering understanding and conflict resolution among diverse groups.
The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Busia’s Oku Kaunya, Kachiliba’s Solomon Lotee, and NCIC Commissioner Kedogo, who all reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace, unity, and development in the North Rift region.
This celebration marked a renewed commitment by NOREB leaders to work collaboratively, ensuring peace remains the foundation for the region’s development.
