Residents of Shantii Informal Settlement Assured of Support Amid KISIP 2 Project Disruptions

Amid challenges posed by KISIP 2 infrastructure upgrades, Shantii informal settlement residents receive assurances of support for fair facilitation and better living standards.

Residents of Shantii informal settlement in Matisi Ward, Saboti Sub-County, have been assured of support to maintain decent living conditions despite disruptions caused by the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project Phase 2 (KISIP 2). The project, which aims to enhance infrastructure in informal settlements, has affected properties in the area, but stakeholders are committed to addressing the residents’ concerns.

Commitment to Supporting Project-Affected Persons (PAPs)

During a stakeholders’ meeting, Dr. Roselyne Nasiebanda, Chief Officer for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development in Trans Nzoia County, acknowledged the challenges faced by Project-Affected Persons (PAPs). She assured residents that those yet to be facilitated would soon receive the necessary support.

“We have already identified the names of those impacted through the Grievances Redress Committees (GRC) and the County Project Coordination Committee (CPCT). Assessments will be conducted to ensure they are facilitated just like the others,” she affirmed.

Dr. Nasiebanda encouraged residents to cooperate with the project’s implementation to ensure timely completion and the full realization of infrastructure upgrades in the settlement.

Addressing Water Supply Challenges

The Chief Officer also addressed water shortages resulting from the disconnection of water pipes in the project area.

“We are engaging with the contractor to resolve the issue and ensure clean water supply, even if it means using water tankers every morning until new pipes are connected,” she stated.

Call for Responsible Waste and Water Management

Peter Masinde, the County’s Project Public Health Officer, urged residents to manage wastewater responsibly to prevent project delays.

“Residents should find ways to control water within their plots to prevent further delays,” Masinde emphasized.

Similarly, Diana Modani, the Environmental Safeguards Officer, called for proper waste disposal practices to avoid interference with the project and neighboring households.

“Let’s dispose of waste responsibly for the benefit of everyone,” Modani added.

Appeals for Vacant Project Areas

Pamela Indimuli, the Project’s Social Safeguards Officer, appealed to residents who have been facilitated but remain in the project area to relocate promptly.

“Continued occupancy in these areas is slowing down progress and could result in unnecessary delays,” Indimuli warned.

Infrastructure Upgrades Underway in Shantii and Beyond

KISIP 2 Project Coordinator Edith Baraza highlighted ongoing infrastructure upgrades in Shantii, Tuwan, and Matisi informal settlements. These initiatives include improvements in roads, drainage systems, streetlights, and the installation of high-mast floodlights.

With continued cooperation between residents, contractors, and stakeholders, the project aims to enhance living conditions and foster sustainable development in Trans Nzoia’s informal settlements.
