Trans Nzoia Allocates Ksh 45 Million to Boost Vocational Training

Trans Nzoia County Government has committed Ksh 45 million to equip vocational training centers, empowering youth with technical skills and addressing equipment shortages through strategic partnerships.

The County Government of Trans Nzoia has allocated Ksh 45 million to enhance vocational training programs aimed at equipping out-of-school youth with technical skills. This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Education and Vocational Training Centres (VTCs), was highlighted during the 6th graduation ceremony at Kitale Vocational Training Centre in Matisi.

According to Vocational Training Director Eliud Lusweti, this allocation underscores Governor George Natembeya’s commitment to ensuring youth in Trans Nzoia have access to the tools and skills needed for self-employment and economic independence.

“We urge parents and youth to embrace technical training. The best inheritance parents can provide is equipping their children with skills for today’s global job market,” Lusweti said.

Strategic Partnerships for Sustainable Training

The county has partnered with the Dutch organization Tools to Work to supply training tools and equipment to over 32 VTCs across Trans Nzoia for the next five years. Lusweti noted that this partnership would address the long-standing challenge of inadequate equipment, a major hindrance for trainers and trainees alike.

“This collaboration with Tools to Work ensures we can now focus on building skills without the limitations of insufficient resources,” Lusweti said.

Support for Graduates and Vulnerable Groups

In addition to equipping VTCs, the county plans to provide startup kits to graduates, enabling them to establish their own businesses. Lusweti acknowledged the role of County Assembly Members, such as Kaplamai MCA Daniel Mosbei, in channeling ward-specific funds toward supporting vocational training initiatives.

The county has also partnered with Child Rescue Kenya (CRK) to empower vulnerable groups, including street youth and young mothers. CRK’s Program Manager, Stephen Baraza, revealed that 191 youths were trained this year at VTCs in Matisi, Machugwa, and Kitale in fields such as:

  • Hairdressing and beauty therapy
  • Building and construction
  • Fashion and design
  • Welding and fabrication
  • Electrical wiring
  • Small engine mechanics

Baraza emphasized the importance of providing trained youth with tools to start businesses. “Training alone is not enough. Graduates need resources to utilize their skills effectively,” he noted.

Achievements and Future Goals

Kitale Vocational Training Centre Manager Beatrice Baraza applauded the efforts of CRK and the county government. She urged graduates to register for NITA and TVETA exams, enabling them to pursue advanced certifications and career growth.

“This graduation is a significant milestone. Many of our graduates have already launched successful businesses,” she said.

Collaborative Efforts for Growth

The graduation ceremony was attended by county and national government officials, including Kitale Vocational Training Centre board members Washington Ngesa and Eva Matila, who reiterated the importance of partnerships in driving sustainable vocational training.

With this robust funding and strategic collaborations, Trans Nzoia County is taking significant strides toward empowering its youth and addressing unemployment through skill development and entrepreneurship.
