In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, the Chief Officer for Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism, Jane Wachwenge, led the planting of over 1,000 tree seedlings at Chepkoilel and Milimani Primary Schools today. This initiative is part of a broader directive issued by Governor George Natembeya, aiming to plant over a million trees within a year.
The directive, given during the signing of performance contracts, underscores the county’s commitment to combating climate change and promoting environmental conservation. “Trees are essential for life as they help produce water,” the Chief Officer emphasized. “This move will enhance environmental sustainability and combat climate change.”
Speaking on behalf of the CEC for Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism, Stanley Kirui, Chief Officer Wachwenge highlighted the importance of this initiative. “We are embarking on this exercise to ensure a greener and healthier environment for future generations,” she said.
During the event, Chief Officer Wachwenge addressed the students, urging them to observe discipline and focus on their studies. “I look forward to seeing these schools produce leaders who will guide our county and nation in the future,” she added.

The county government is also working on educational programs to raise awareness about the importance of nurturing trees and sustainable agricultural practices. These programs aim to equip farmers and residents with the knowledge and skills needed to maintain and protect trees.
