Trans Nzoia County has united with other counties and international partners in the fight against climate change through the FLLoCA-KfW co-financing program. Launched in February 2022 and set to continue until June 2027, FLLoCA is a collaborative effort between the World Bank, the Kenyan government, and county administrations. Samson Ojwang, the County CEC for Water, Environment, and Climate Change, expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential to empower local communities in addressing climate challenges while enhancing national and county-level capacities for climate risk management. He highlighted that the KfW co-financing agreement with Germany would unlock additional funding through the Climate Change Resilience Grant (CCRI Grant-A), benefiting 16 counties within the Lake Victoria ecosystem zone, including Trans Nzoia.
The program’s official launch occurred yesterday at the Grand Swiss Hotel in Kisumu, where Cabinet Secretaries, Governors, and executives from participating counties signed an Intergovernmental Participation Agreement. The KfW co-financing emphasizes community-driven solutions to improve food security, foster sustainable youth livelihoods, and enhance agricultural productivity across the value chain. While led by the Department of Water, Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, FLLoCA will utilize existing county structures, collaborating closely with the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Cooperative Development to promote the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices for long-term sustainability.
Today marks the commencement of a capacity-building workshop targeting County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) and County Chief Officers (CCOs) responsible for climate change. Subsequent sessions will focus on Directors and members of the County Climate Change Unit (CCU), covering areas such as social and environmental safeguards, monitoring and evaluation, and fund management. The workshop is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, March 28th, 2024.
