Trans Nzoia County Launches Beaconing Exercise for KISIP 2 Land Tenure Regulation

Trans Nzoia County kicks off the beaconing exercise under the KISIP 2 project to secure land tenure for residents of Maridadi and Khalabana informal settlements.

The Trans Nzoia County Department of Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development has launched the beaconing exercise for land tenure regulation as part of the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project Phase 2 (KISIP 2) in the Maridadi and Khalabana informal settlements. This initiative is a critical step in ensuring that residents receive their long-awaited land ownership documents.

Speaking at the launch, Trans Nzoia County Surveyor Ezekiel Khatili underscored the significance of the exercise. “This is a vital part of our implementation process to ensure residents in these informal settlements get their land documents. We are currently midway through the project,” Khatili said. He urged residents to take care of the beacons after receiving their beaconing certificates.

Khatili further explained that the department would engage with Project Affected Persons (PAPs), especially those whose land parcels are located on road reserves. “The County Government, through the Department of Lands, will facilitate the relocation of affected persons to allow the project’s smooth implementation,” he added.

The next phase involves preparing title deeds for the residents, with the County Government aiming to distribute them by December this year. “We are committed to ensuring that by the end of this year, residents from Maridadi and Khalabana will receive their title deeds,” Khatili assured.

Funded by the National Government, County Government, World Bank, AFD, and IDA, the KISIP 2 project aims to improve living conditions in informal settlements. Maridadi, Khalabana, and Shimo la Tewa are the primary beneficiaries of this initiative in Trans Nzoia County. The beaconing exercise is being led by Spatial Milestone Consultancy, the firm contracted by KISIP 2 to oversee the land tenure regularization process for the two settlements.

This project represents a major step towards improving the livelihoods of residents in informal settlements, ensuring long-term land security and stability for families in Trans Nzoia County.
