Trans Nzoia County Residents to Benefit from KISIP 2 Projects

Trans Nzoia's KISIP 2 project will improve sanitation and water access for over 1,500 families in the Kipsongo informal settlements, enhancing the health and well-being of the community.

Residents of the Burma/Kipsongo informal settlements in Trans Nzoia County are set to benefit from improved sanitation and water access under the KISIP 2 project. The project, which aims to enhance living conditions in underserved areas, will address critical infrastructure needs identified by the community itself.

County Executive Committee (CEC) for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development, Janerose Nasimiyu Mutama, confirmed the upcoming construction of an ablution block and water project during a recent fact-finding visit to the area. She stressed the importance of the project, citing the large population and inadequate sanitation facilities in Kipsongo.

Governor George Natembeya, working alongside the project implementation committee, has initiated the process of selecting a contractor to ensure the project begins swiftly. In addition to improved infrastructure, the construction phase will create employment opportunities for local residents.

Edith Baraza, the Trans Nzoia KISIP 2 project coordinator, emphasized the project’s necessity, pointing to the significant health risks posed by the lack of proper sanitation facilities. The project aims to benefit over 1,500 families by providing clean water and modern sanitation facilities, reducing the risk of disease outbreaks and improving overall community health.

Kipsongo residents expressed their gratitude for the initiative. Local residents Lodome and Catherine Nasokol shared their current reliance on the nearby river for bathing and drinking water, expressing hope that the new facilities would greatly enhance their quality of life.

Pamela Indimuli, the project’s social safety guard coordinator, highlighted the importance of behavior change among community members, particularly regarding the use of the new facilities to curb open defecation. She praised the AFD and World Bank for their support and urged the community to take responsibility for maintaining the new infrastructure for future generations.

The KISIP 2 project represents a transformative step for the Kipsongo settlement, bringing long-needed improvements in sanitation and water access.
