Trans-Nzoia Prepares for Historic Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Launch

Trans-Nzoia County is set to host the launch of Africa’s second Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, a landmark event in conservation, tourism, and sustainable development.

Trans-Nzoia County is gearing up for the highly anticipated launch of Africa’s second Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, a milestone in environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The event, scheduled to take place in the county, is expected to bring together key stakeholders from Kenya and Uganda, including government officials, conservationists, and international organizations. A preparatory meeting held at the Trans-Nzoia County Headquarters laid the groundwork to ensure the success of the launch.

🔄 Preserving Mt. Elgon’s Vital Ecosystem

Speaking during the planning meeting, Deputy Governor H.E. Philomena Kapkory reaffirmed the county’s dedication to environmental conservation, particularly in safeguarding Mt. Elgon and the Cherangany Hills. She emphasized the region’s critical role in sustaining water sources for millions of people.

“Mt. Elgon alone supports over 100 million people through its watershed services. This biosphere reserve will ensure its protection while promoting eco-friendly economic activities,” said Kapkory.

🌎 Boosting Conservation and Sustainable Tourism

The Transboundary Biosphere Reserve is expected to enhance biodiversity conservation while positioning Trans-Nzoia as a premier eco-tourism destination. Amos Nyongesa, County Tourism Director, highlighted the economic opportunities the designation will bring, urging local stakeholders to prepare for increased tourist activities.

“This initiative will attract global attention and increase the number of tourists visiting Mt. Elgon, boosting the local economy,” Nyongesa stated.

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director Bakari Chongwa echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure development to accommodate the projected growth in tourist numbers. He noted that Kenya aims to increase its annual tourist arrivals to 5 million by 2030.

📈 Legislative and Environmental Commitments

To strengthen conservation efforts, Godfrey Wekesa, County Director of Water, Environment, and Natural Resources, announced plans to enact two crucial environmental laws:

✔️ Sustainable Forest Management Act – To regulate deforestation and promote reforestation initiatives. ✔️ County Climate Change Act – A policy framework to address climate change resilience and carbon sequestration.

“Mt. Elgon serves as a vital carbon sink and a source of clean water for millions. Protecting it is not just a local concern but a global responsibility,” Wekesa said.

International Recognition and Regional Collaboration

The biosphere reserve will be Africa’s second transboundary site, following the Maloti-Drakensberg Biosphere Reserve shared between South Africa and Lesotho. The designation is a result of joint efforts between Kenya, Uganda, and UNESCO to ensure cross-border conservation.

A high-profile delegation, including the Prime Minister of Uganda and representatives from the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO, is expected to attend the launch, underlining the reserve’s significance at both regional and global levels.

🚀 A New Era for Conservation in Trans-Nzoia

The launch of the Transboundary Biosphere Reserve will mark a new chapter for environmental sustainability, tourism, and economic growth in Trans-Nzoia County. As preparations continue, county officials remain optimistic that this initiative will create lasting benefits for both the local community and the broader ecosystem.
