Trans Nzoia Nurses’ Strike Suspended After Agreement

Healthcare services in Trans Nzoia County are set to resume after a three-month nurses’ strike was suspended for 90 days, following the signing of an MOU.

Healthcare services in Trans Nzoia County are set to resume after a three-month nurses’ strike was suspended for 90 days. The decision follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the county government and the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN).

The agreement includes a commitment to address all grievances raised by the nurses, including the reinstatement of union dues and the implementation of previous agreements signed in July 2024.

Speaking after the signing, Trans Nzoia Deputy County Secretary George Kisaka assured the public that hospitals across the county would be operational from tomorrow at 8 a.m.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that all issues raised are fully implemented within the 90 days,” Kisaka said. “This will involve collaboration between the county executive, the County Public Service Board, and the County Assembly.”

MOU Highlights

  • Reinstatement of Union Dues: All dues for KNUN members will be restored immediately.
  • Implementation Timeline: Previous agreements must be fully implemented by February 2025.
  • Non-Victimization Assurance: Nurses who participated in the strike will face no discrimination or retaliation.

A Collaborative Effort

Peter Wamoto, Chairperson of the County Public Service Board, highlighted the importance of dialogue in resolving the crisis.

“This agreement demonstrates that mutual respect and teamwork can overcome challenges. We are confident that all commitments will be met well before the 90-day deadline,” Wamoto said.

KNUN Secretary-General Edward Cheruiyot expressed optimism, stating the union suspended the strike in good faith.

“We trust the county government will honor the MOU commitments, allowing us to move forward together,” Cheruiyot said.

Commitment to Healthcare

County Assembly Health Committee Chairperson Sara Lubano lauded the resolution, emphasizing the essential role of nurses in the healthcare system.

“This suspension ensures that residents can access medical care without further disruption,” Lubano said.

The agreement was signed by representatives from the county government, Public Service Board, KNUN, and other key stakeholders.

Public Reassurance

With healthcare services set to resume, residents of Trans Nzoia County are encouraged to seek medical care at their nearest facilities. Officials have pledged to ensure a smooth return to full operations while addressing the nurses’ concerns.

The county government is optimistic that the resolution will bring lasting improvements to the healthcare sector.
