Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Executive Robert Wamalwa led other county officials in a tree growing exercise graced by Environment Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa to mark Mazingira Day.
The auspicious occasion held at Kabuyefwe Comprehensive school in Sikhendu Friday under the theme 𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑢𝑑𝑖 𝑝𝑟𝑦𝑚𝑜 𝑡𝑢𝑔𝑟𝑜𝑤 𝑓𝑟𝑢𝑖𝑡 𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑠 sought to encourage communities to grow trees to help mitigate and create resilience to the effects of climate change.
Governor George Natembeya, in his speech read by the Environment CECM underscored the need to conserve and protect the environment just as he highlighted the milestone made by his administration in promoting conservation.
The Environment CS on the other hand disclosed plans by the government to plant 2 billion trees every year in efforts to reach the set 15 billion trees target by the year 2030 adding that thus required concerted efforts by all stakeholders.
At least 20 million trees have so far been planted in Trans Nzoia County in the past two years even as higher targets are set to ensure greening of the county and beyond.
The occasion was also attended by representatives of various government agencies and state corporations including National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya Forest Services (KFS), Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) as well as private entities.
Also in attendance from the county were the County Secretary Truphosa Amere, Education CECM Janerose Mutama, WENRCC Chief Officer Dorothy Nyukuri, a couple MCAs, Environment Director Godfrey Wekesa among others.

Several environmental champions from the county were recognized and issued with certificates of recognition for their endeavoured efforts to conserve the environment.
